He trained in Philadelphia, where he developed exceptional skill in, what was then the young science of interventional cardiology. In 1982, Dr. Watson moved to Montana, where he became the first cardiologist in his town to perform coronary angioplasty. The interventional cardiology program, which he developed, gained statewide renown and, by 1986, Dr. Watson was a member of the Board of Directors and President of the Montana Heart Association.

Currently, Dr. James Watson maintains an active cardiology practice, in Redmond, Washington, where he specializes in interventional cardiology. Dr. Watson has continued to be on the cutting edge of all modes of this subspecialty, including fibrinolytic therapy, balloon angioplasty, stent deployment, atherectomy and rotational atherectomy. He is also skilled in both trans-thoracic and trans-esophageal echocardiography, and pacemaker implantation.
